We had THE BEST summer intern. Meet Ali!

Hey y’all! I’m Ali, and I had the opportunity to be a design intern at 1MISSION this summer. Even though I do say y’all, I was born and raised in Scottsdale, Arizona, and am now in my fourth year of the Visual Communication of Design program at Arizona State University. A few things you should know about me: I am passionate about my faith, I’m a personality test enthusiast, and I love adventuring, sports, and scaring people (you’ll find out more about that soon).

Going into this internship, I wanted real-world design experience and to figure out what exactly I want to do with graphic design after I graduate. Thankfully, I got both. The internship consisted of me designing for our website, putting together a few videos and animations, creating fun graphics, branding, and so on. A big project I got to work on was the rebrand of Bikes Fight Poverty. Our basis was, “How do we make people love this brand and make it fit both 1MISSION and the ‘ride’ theme?” Sydney (my super cool Creative Director) and I started with sketching out new designs and concepts and then put them into the computer to refine them. Once we chose the finished logo, we then got to do all of the fun stuff with it – put it on banners, t-shirts, that kind of thing.

While working at 1MISSION, I also got to see how everything works behind the scenes. The team is made up of people who care deeply about individuals and who bring an uplifting, positive attitude to everyone they encounter. Most importantly, I got to learn that everything they do – and everything I have been able to do here – has a purpose. I am constantly reminded of this as I hear that more and more houses are funded and families’ lives are changed. Because of this, I am so excited to go to work every morning. How many people get to say that?

“So as I leave to go back to ASU for my last year, I’m confident that I know what I want to do after I graduate. I want a job that has a greater purpose and one that I’m excited about every day, just like I had this summer.”

So how did I score this sweet internship with 1MISSION, you may wonder? I met with Jason, Sydney, Nate, and Katie, and I enjoyed it so much that I almost forgot I had to accept the internship offer because I already felt part of the team. During the meeting, we talked about my design work and got to know each other. Toward the end, I was asked, “What is your favorite YouTube video?” Not realizing they would ask to see it, I told them about a video I posted of me scaring my old roommate for a year straight. I don’t know if that’s the professional thing to do in a job interview or not, but hey, it worked out! Although, I still now question whether it was my work that won them over or if it was the video. Here’s the video. I’ll let you guys decide.
